Sookie's boyfriend has been very distant-in another state, distant. Now she's off to Mississippi to mingle with the underworld at Club Dead-a little haunt where the vampire elite go to chill out. But when she finally finds Bill-caught in an act of betrayal-she's not sure whether to save him...or sharpen some stakes.

I picked up an omnibus edition of the first three volumes. The first one was quite good fun - sprightly heroine, sexy sex, a lot of action - Stephanie Plum with a menagerie. Then it began to become clear that Charlaine Harris hates her main character; we pass from Stephanie Plum to a female Mickey Spillane - beaten up, bludgeoned and betrayed ever other chapter. Quite often it's other women that do the bludgeoning - a maenad, a vampire, an angry ex-lover of the only male that seems right for the young lady (so of course she can't have him). I see other readers have complained that Sookie gets increasingly whiney as the series goes on - little wonder, given the treatment that her author subjects her to.

I don't think I'll go any further with this series.

I'm really getting into this series. It's getting that I can't wait to pick up the next one. I did this with the early part of the Anita Blake series, too.

This book had a couple different mysteries and is developing both the romance/interpersonal arc and the overall mystery arc. I liked this a bit better than the last one because the mysteries are seemingly intertwined and both more and less than one might think. And while one of the answers to the mysteries is actually fairly obvious, I didn't guess it, which is an improvement.
