Aaron reviewed Tubman Command by Elizabeth Cobbs
The Tubman Command
4 stars
Harriet Tubman lived a remarkable life, and Cobbs focuses on one particular incident -- the rescue of several hundred enslaved people from plantations along the Combahee River in 1863. While the full details of this action (including the level of Tubman's involvement) are not known, there is enough historical evidence for Cobbs' fertile imagination to build a compelling and engaging story. Her portrayals ring true, and she is particularly skilled at evoking the profound cruelty that slavery did to Black families during the antebellum era, as her characters and those they love are forced into impossible, heartbreaking circumstances.
