I ended up liking this way more than I expected to. It's kind of ridiculously Tolkien-derivative in some ways, Jordan can't name things to save his life (the Mountains of Dhoom, really?) and the complete knuckle-brained idiocy of the main characters gets incredibly frustrating at certain points. But the world-building is fantastic, the writing is very good and the 800+ pages went by a lot faster than I expected them to.
As in Lord of the Rings, there's something very appealing about stories that take place in a diminished world, a world fallen from its previous glory.
