The King of the Union lies on his deathbed, the peasants revolt, and the nobles scramble to steal his crown. No one believes that the shadow of war is about to fall across the heart of the Union. Only the First of the Magi can save the world, but there are risks.
Clearly the grandfather of grimdark setting a board of hopeless, difficult situations with pawns that are real and flawed. Couple of good twists in the finale but mostly I really appreciated a couple of clever writing devices.
This third book was a return to form after the pointless second one, even if he did lay it on a little thick a little too often (yes, it hurts the clubfooted torturer every time he moves, do we need a paragraph about it every time?), and went straight over the top on a few other occasions (let's just put everyone in charge, that'll really move the plot along). The "War and Peace"-style urban disaster climax redeemed much of it and (most of) the main characters, though.
