i haven't read anything so focused on one specific situation or place or people in a while (added to the fact that i was intending to read the wretched of the earth first), so i think that i needed a different set of expectations before going into this one. that being said, the context with which i read this is may 2024, where itsnotreal's genocide against palestine is still burning with no end to u.s. support in sight. the parallels of the algerian revolution with the palestinian struggle against genocide (and the reverberations outside of algeria/palestine) are endless, and i can't help but think this book is timeless.
