I had not read any reviews or descriptions of this book before I began reading although I did know it had been published recently and was the third Alderley book. Having read the first two when I was young I had assumed this would be similar. What a surprise awaited me. It's a very sad book - Colin seems to have spent his life driven by a single need and suffering much mental anguish in the process. There is a somewhat peaceful resolution for him at the end but imagining his pain over all those years is rather heartbreaking.
The poetic style of writing is not one I particularly enjoy, but it did bring across the story very well.
