One Frustrated Man's Apocalypse Story

It didn't happen overnight, not like in the movies.

I mean, it took more than a year before anybody looked up from their smartphones long enough to wonder why so many of their neighbors were infected. Why so many were dying.

The vaccination riots came and went. The grocery store shelves emptied out. The spigots eventually ran dry. That was around the time I moved underground and sealed the hatch on my backyard bunker.

That was a couple of years ago.

Now, my radio hasn't picked up a signal from the world up top since I can't remember when. My exterior camera died in a storm last spring. And the loneliness has set in, gnawing at me, making me think crazy thoughts, including the one that'll change everything.

I have to leave the bunker and see if anyone is …

austin was a big ugh. he comes off as sleazy and annoying instead of charming. and she's saying no bc he's a football player and they work together. i admit that judging him for being a football player is unfounded, but her fear of a destroyed reputation/career bc they work together is real. he should have waited until they were done working together or he should have never gotten her to be his personal pt in the first place.

and then idgi; chloe's okay with hooking up in PUBLIC PLACES?? wtf. ofc chloe gets exposed; why would you drink that much at a work party?! no sympathy for you.

also, the whole blurb was basically about austin being a single dad, which was maybe 2% of the book. that isn't misleading at all.

only reason i finished it was bc it looked like there was a lot of content left …

Not quite the same caliber as the Psy/Changeling books, but still good. It didn't seem 100% polished and it rambled on for longer than it needed to (and this is coming from someone who loves reading Singh's words).

A word of caution: this is a lot more explicit than Singh's other works.

Not the Sherlock Holmes stories, but a varied (and large) collection of his other fictional work. ACD was certainly very prolific, and the modes range from the rural to the Lovecraftian (for example "The Horror of the Heights", which I read years ago, remembered recently and tentatively ascribed to William Hope Hodgson), and one or two that evoke Poe's Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. No Holmes, though that Gigantic Hound is perhaps foreshadowed in "The Bully of Brocas Court" which introduces a terrifying and ghostly Jack Russell Terrier!
