Imagine, if you will, an extremely dark, depressing ending. A character-death, broken-heart, lifelong-trauma sort of ending. And, just in case you have a glimmer of hope that this is not the actual ending, there's a big ol' THE END at the bottom of the page, just like how all the previous books in the series have ended.
If you're like me, you might put the book down, then and there, without reading any further, and just take a bit to reel. Then, if you make the decision to see if the author has an after-note that explains why this ending was so drastically different in tone from the book, you might eventually turn the page.

I mean, I already wasn't a big fan of this book. While I overall liked her lover, I seriously did not think well of her decision to have "deep", "meaningful", "give all of yourself freely for the first time" sex on a park bench, right outside the wake of a dear friend, and that's just the first chapter or so. Another reviewer correctly pointed out that this biracial character literally has to give up one half of her self in order to find happiness. And all of it seemed kinda rushed, with some events only seeming to occur in order to bring in crossover characters from the author's other books.
But after specifically pulling a stunt to make readers think that the final book ended with something terrible happening to three of the characters they've probably grown attached to, and then laughing at the readers... I'm never going to pick up another book by this author, ever.
