I didn't mind [b:Brighton Road|490127|Brighton Road|Susan Carroll|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1175189907s/490127.jpg|478361] at all, and I put up with [b:The Heart of the Matter|3692|The Heart of the Matter|Graham Greene|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1266448657s/3692.jpg|3266950] when it took its turn, but [b:The End of the Affair|29641|The End of the Affair|Graham Greene|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1239559671s/29641.jpg|267229] is just too damned Catholic-angsty for me. I'm through with his arguing-with-God period.

I also thought the writing was really clumsy. He's gone for a first-person narrator, but then has to use devices like verbatim reports from private investigators, quoted entries from purloined diaries, and letters arriving late addressed from the deceased... all unconvincingly and conveniently worded to advance the plot.

Review of 'The End of the Affair (Twentieth Century Classics)' on 'Storygraph'

The sheer humanity of Greene's characters is incredible. They characters themselves are completely ordinary, but what is truly amazing is how Greene manages to explore their very ordinary lives.
