I am really clueless on how to inaugurate my first – wait for it – positive review on goodreads. Maybe I should quickly dive in the matter without further delays or maybe I’m ought to seize the opportunity to discuss the unequivocal tendency in the human nature to unveil and criticize what’s awry. I’ll settle for the former. So let’s start pulling sunshine threads shall we?
The boys at the police department assigned to the 87th Detective Squad got a phone call from an apparently old nemesis, the Deaf Man, claiming that with their assistance, he’s going to steal 500 grand on the last day of April. And not only does the short-on-hearing mastermind declare his schemes, he also gives clues to his law pals on the whereabouts of the up-coming crime. Alongside this promising symbiosis, strange (to say the least) events are happening including a crucifixion and burglaries with live kittens as a signature move. This is my cue. No more revelations.
Ed McBain has a fascinatingly engaging writing style to which I tip my hat. His explosive 87th Precinct sizzling crime mystery is action packed, adrenaline pumped even when its main plot branches into sub-plots. The story never fails to be less interesting. It’s a concoction of bad cops, junkies, thieveries and crimes interlaced with acute suspense. Incidentally, what caught my attention mostly was passage number ten. It somehow stands out from the story as a whole – in a good way. “Take a look at this city. How can you possibly hate her?” How can you possibly not fall in love with the vivid description of the city that follows this hook?
To sum it up, this novel has self-sufficient propane that keeps it moving. You won’t have much of a say in turning those pages, unless you want to keep a mystery novel a real mystery. I can’t wait to hear more of the Deaf Man!
