The Guncle charms and heals

Patrick could have easily turned in to a caricature of a gay white man, but each Guncle Rule pulls out more humanity and connection. The kids were well developed and acted appropriately for young children who are unexpectedly taken in by G.U.P. It’s sweet, sassy, emotional, and uplifting. Sometimes we need to get tossed out of our comfort zones to see what we haven’t lost and what we can gain.

Laugh, Cry, Laugh Again

I don't usually read humour books, but I really enjoyed this. And even LOL'd a number of times. It's lighthearted... for the most part. But seeing as the major theme is grief (and how to deal with it), the eye-watering moments are inescapable. It's rather predictable, but not in a terrible way, which helps keep it lighthearted (and heartwarming) and makes it a gratifying read. The Crisis could have been more dire, so maybe closer to a 3.5, but rounding up.

Review of 'The Guncle' on 'Goodreads'

Fun story - perfect summer listen. Loved the Guncle's voice – reminded me of the cadence Tom Papa uses to deliver his stand-up.

I was told this was light-hearted

Witty sitcom romp layered with grief and trauma, perhaps some growth and acceptance... this never goes deep, and it would have been better if it could have, but then it wouldn't be light-hearted and easy.

None

Such a fun book about a gay uncle taking his nephew and niece in for a long summer. Reconnecting, finding a place in her heart for love and care and slowly taking down the wall of protection he build following the death of his partner.
It covers many current issues, a lot about being an outcast vs normal, coming out, family and friends. A light-hearted and funny book but with big messages.
