Molly Foust reviewed The Appointment by Herta Müller
Review of 'The Appointment' on 'Goodreads'
3 stars
Entertainment value 2- Literary value at least a 4. The metaphors are fresh and original, the story interesting, the writing exceptional.
The book is about a young factory worker who is being interrogated by Ceausecu's secret police. The men in the story are drunk cheating bastards, the women dull, hopeless or mean and everyone is awash with hopelessness, grossness, meanness, lewdness or a combination...
Muller effectively communicates the desperate, drab, listless feeling of life under the iron curtain. So while I definitely visited Romania cerca 1975-85, it was a gray place to land.
