I wasn’t expecting this book. I read assuming it would be a relatively simple narrative of the passing of Hamnet, broadly historical, and with a focus on his father - mostly because I rarely read the blurb. I was, instead and therefore, blindsided by a narrative which centred on Anne (Agnes, as in her father’s will; Shakespeare is never mentioned by name, to ensure the narrative isn’t overwhelmed by the weight of his fame), her history, and the deep emotional impact of the loss of her son. Exceptionally moving. #bookstagram
