Louis is scared when his father tells him that he's different from other swans. He doesn't want to be different. Even though he can't talk, Louis knows he could learn to read and write, if only he could get into school.

Sam Beaver, a boy who understands all wild things, agrees to help. But Mrs. Hammerbotham isn't sure she can handle a Trumpeter Swan in her classroom. --back cover

one of the first books i ever read. i was hungry for angst even as a brat toesucking child. i can still remember each scene clearly... louie's father breaking into a music shop, louie cutting his webs so he could more adroitly play the trumpet, practicing the bugles at the camp, the watercress sandwich. i had watercress for the first time in hot pot a couple months ago. i like him.
