This is the second book in the Honor Harington series, a large and growing collection of classic space opera style written by someone very well versed in military history and tactics. Webber's writing style and level of detail provide a compelling and almost unstoppable urge to read the whole thing through in one sitting, or at least from the middle onward, after he has made his introductions and located his story in whatever new place and time Honor finds herself.

Honor Harrington Deals With Male Chauvinism could be the title of this book, and that's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's not space battles. I'm not the first to point out that this series is best when describing space battles. The more it strays from that, the less interesting it tends to get. The first book was mostly space battles, the rest of the series increasingly deals with politics, which simply aren't as interesting from this author.

Weber's writing did improve a little bit since writing On Basilisk Station. However, while the infodumping has lessened, the main flaws remain: uneven writing, Mary Sue, viewpoint jumping. The last has even gone worse!
And then there are the clichés. Oh the agony of cliché.

A backwards tech-fearing planet (well, two) of old "Texas" style women hating people.
A mutiny. Please sci-fi space opera writers: stop it with the mutinies already! Find a better plotdevice, m'kay.
A deus ex machina to save the battle.

Still, the story was engaging, even though it felt a bit stale. Maybe I shouldn't read so much sci-fi space opera in succession.
