The first, unfinished novel of Joseph Roth, published as a book posthumously. A thrilling portrayal of the rise of the extreme right which, especially in the present political climate, has lost nothing of its urgency. I love Roth's forceful, evocative style, his strong characterisations, the evocation of the post WWI atmosphere in Germany, the ubiquitous violence, the disastrous consequences of fake news..
