Welcome to new Russia, where the Russian Empire has been restored back to the draconian codes of Ivan the Terrible. Corporal punishment is back and the monarchy is divided once again, but this is the future, the not so distant future for the Russian empire, or is it? Day of the Oprichnik follows a government henchman, an Oprichnik, through a day of grotesque event.

Day of the Oprichnik is a thought provoking Science Fiction novel of the worst possible Russia imagined. But while the book is dark, it also is hilarious and then it has this wonderfully satirical nature about it. Komiaga is the narrator of this gem, an anti-hero and one of the Tsar’s most devoted henchmen. While the humour and satire throughout this book is grotesque, this book is a perfect example of great contemporary Russian literature as well as a political critique.

I will admit I like …

I had high hopes for this one, but it never really got the the point where I knew exactly what I was reading. It was quite fascinating at times, but the plot is just downright uninteresting. The best of the subplots tended to be rather amusing, though, so it was a somewhat hard pick between 3 and 4 stars. But at the end of the day, I'm definitely more in the 3 star camp than the four star one.

That was an interesting read...Idea of mixed old world and future is quite intriguing. Whole book is one big "What if?" on current politics and economy. China and Russia as two powerful countries with western countries failing (or eastern propaganda being very convincing). Few images struck with me after reading this piece and they were quite unnerving. I now realized that writing few sentences about book that's all about one day of certain government official is not as easy as it seemed. Everything is written from the perspective of this official (oprichnik) and some things are only explained few pages after they are used for the first time. That's quite OK, but you have to realize that common words can have different meaning in the future :-)
