On his 53rd birthday New York psychoanalyst Dr Frederick Starks receives a threatening letter from a man who calls himself Rumplestiltskin. If he does not discover Rumplestiltskin's identity and the cause of his anger within fifteen days, Starks's relatives' lives will be destroyed, unless Starks kills himself. The beginning is unconvincing, as Starks's behaviour seems completely irrational but it improves towards the end.
