Apollo reviewed The Wind in His Heart by Charles de Lint
Typical de Lint Left Me Uneasy
3 stars
De Lint's Newford stories were very important to me when I was a teenager, and there's still so much to like in his approach to urban fantasy. This novel features more indigenous characters that many of his stories and I felt a greater sense of unease with how he approached tropes and culture. He's a well-meaning writer, but I think he stumbled into appropriation more often than someone as thoughtful and experienced as he should. There's also a false accusation of sexual assault that felt a mistake to include. The core story and characters are rich, and I did enjoy aspects of it even though I was distracted by some missteps.
