"The Redbreast is a fabulous introduction to Nesbø’s tough-as-nails series protagonist, Oslo police detective Harry Hole. A brilliant and epic novel, breathtaking in its scope and design—winner of The Glass Key for best Nordic crime novel and selected as the best Norwegian crime novel ever written by members of Norway’s book clubs—The Redbreast is a chilling tale of murder and betrayal that ranges from the battlefields of World War Two to the streets of modern-day Oslo. Follow Hole as he races to stop a killer and disarm a ticking time-bomb from his nation’s shadowy past."--Goodreads.com.

When they advertise Jo Nesbø as ‘The Next Steig Larsson’, I’m inclined to pass on this author. But since a lot of people seem to be raving about this author, I thought I better check him out, especially when they class his Harry Hole series as Hard-Boiled. I’ve found the only reason they are calling him the next Larsson is simply because he is another Scandinavian crime writer; which means some overly graphic murders, Nazis and an expected twist. The Redbreast is the third book in the Harry Hole novel but the first available in English. Hole is investigating neo-Nazi activity which leads him to further explore Norway’s activities on the Eastern Front during WWII.

Very well written, a bit confusing because of all the flashbacks and numerous characters with Norwegian names but well worth the effort with the main character's anti-hero incarnation, it's sweet cynicism and cold outlook on life.

Nesbo weaves an intricate thread built between events occurring during the Second World War and the present, a multiplicity of Norwegian names where we're not quite sure who's who and who did what to whom. One would need a character map in order to reliably follow the plot. But as said well worth the effort of reading on and follow Hole's hell though alcoholism and loss of close friends and savour with him the fact that he's being promoted because of what is perceived as a blunder that the authorities do not want to be revealed to the public,

Norway revealed as not a quiet paradise but as a cold and grey wasteland of …

The first of the series to be translated into English but is the third in the series. I'm normally a stickler for reading in order but learning Norwegian might be a bit extreme! Still the story is still enjoyable and I learned a bit about the Norwegian involvement in WW2. Some of the characters are a bit cliched but thought the translation seemed to be well done.
