From the author of the cult classic The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear comes another fantastical journey into Zamonia. This captivating story from the unique imagination of Walter Moers is astonishingly inventive, amusing and engrossing. Rumo is a wolperting, a creature that looks like a horned dog that walks on two legs. At the beginning of the book he is very young and grows up in the larder of the demonicles, one-eyed beings that savor the shrieks of the beings they eat alive. As they are about to eat Rumo, he exercises his talent for fighting and escapes. Thereafter he moves from one adventure to another.

Review of 'Rumo & his miraculous adventures' on 'Goodreads'

5 stars

Out of all of the books in Moers' Zamonia series, this is probably his strongest. It has that perfect blend of weirdness with a straightforward narrative.

Is Rumo himself a little bland character-wise? Well, yes, but he kind of needs to be to keep the novel from becoming busier than it already is. It also helps that he's constantly surrounded by a colorful cast of characters and scenery that's totally immersive.

The Zamonia series isn't for everyone, and I'm not saying that to be condescending. You'll either love it or hate it. Also keep in mind that even if this book is the third in a series, it can be read separately from the rest. After reading all of the Zamonia books, I've found that this one offers the best introduction.
