The setting, a London with poor kids struggling to make ends meet and therefore working, everyone having had a traumatic experience of one sort or another seemed a bit grim.
But for a simple, adventurous story with a bit of mystery and with friendships and mentor-ships and parents and loves involved - it's an excellent book.
