Upon a large and elaborate chess-board, the white queen swoops from one end to the other, often putting herself in check, from which she escapes by the skin of her teeth and with a little help from her friends. Luckily for her, she has an amazingly powerful singing voice, with which she is able to confuse and confound her enemies.
The books read quite well, but are extremely long: the heroine repeats the same errors of judgement over and over again. Three volumes would have been quite enough - or even two.
As in many of these adventure stories, the characters often roll their eyes in exasperation. It seems unlikely that a cultural code that developed mainly among young women in the USA from about the 60s would be of similar extent and signification among the medieval Chinese.
