XolokReads reviewed The Last Guardian by Jeff Grubb (Warcraft, #4)
One of the earliest WC novels
3 stars
I knew this was one of the earliest Warcraft novels. My expectations were kind of in the dumpster. In 2002 Warcraft (even video games in general) wasn't yet the phenomenon it would become and I figured that even a capable author wouldn't necessarily bring their A-game to a novel based on a computer game. I was pleasantly surprised to find in The Last Guardian a perfectly serviceable story set in this game's established lore. It didn't lean completely on tropes or Tolkein. Who was good and evil was pretty clear, but there was still a bit of intrigue. It expanded on the scant story in the game without just replacing it. It did a little world building without putting up the We Are World Building Now sign a reader might run across some other fantasy novels. Not too bad.
