Wonderful little story
Note first that this isn't a novel or even a novella; more like a long short story. But as such, it hits so many tropes that I adore: the mysteries of Manhattan, the old shop that you find once and can't find again, mazy stairs and doors and chutes and elevators, endless bookshelves stretching into the distance.
And also the remorseless grinding of time.
