unicorndeburgh reviewed Child of a Hidden Sea by A. M. Dellamonica (Hidden Sea Tales, #1)
Review of 'Child of a hidden sea' on 'Goodreads'
This trilogy is dashing and engrossing. Dellamonica does really wonderful worldbuilding -- the natural world, society (and there are many, this isn't one of those planets with 1 town and 1 language). This is both science fiction and fantasy. The way the protagonist engages with the new world is pure science fiction, but the addition of magic takes us into fantasy territory. The magic has internal consistency, and limits.
I'd say that this is character-driven, though with a fast-paced plot. The protagonist, Sophie Hansa, is smart, active young woman. She rock climbs and scuba dives, paying for her adventures by being a guide and marine videographer. She's fascinated by wildlife and a scientist at heart. And then's she plunged, via magic, into another world, and goes about trying to figure it out.

If you've loved series set in the British navy during the Napoleonic wars, you'll love the ships in the new world. I plunged from book one through to the 3rd book, and then hunted down the "prequel" short stories.
