Betty

No choice but to give this five stars.

To me, this wasn’t a typical five star. It wasn’t gripping, or making me giggle and smile every other page. But I feel this book spreads such an amazing message, is written so beautifully, and holds so much care and respect to what has come before it, it just HAS to be a five star. This was an incredible and inspiring story, I truly can’t quite put it all into words. Simply a book that in the future, NEEDS to be a classic. Idc that it wasn’t a particularly fun and enjoyable read. It’s still a five star to me, Tiffany McDaniel is truly an artist.

Similar in spirit with John Steinbeck's 'East of Eden' novel, at least this was the impression the book left on me. Graphic scenes of rape and violence, even if they are very important for the narrative and for the development of partially life-inspired characters. Denouncing racism, religious bigotism and sexism. Excellent book altogether.

Well, this DNF is disappointing. I’d been anticipating this read, thinking I was going to love this book. But as I read the prologue I realized, no, this is not for me. I prefer much more realism in character dialogue than I got with the prologue. But I think this book has its audience (clearly) of people who want much more poetic dialogue, tweaked to make it more beautiful.
