Perfect Blue: Complete Metamorphosis

I haven't watched the films based on this book, so I read it without many expectations. The body horror and suspense were intense, but the depictions of the women characters undercut the positives in this novel; one antagonist was a disturbing caricature of someone who should have elicited sympathies.

The message that a woman should be able to decide what she wants to do with her body is appreciated - but the story itself undermined that message a lot. And the execution was poor. I’m not sure how much to blame on bad translation
