Per tractar-se de la novel·la de terror contemporani per excel·lència, m’ha fet reflexionar molt sobre l’amor i el què suposa.

Chris MacNeil—adored film star, divorced sin- gle mother—has come to Washington, D.C. to finish a movie. Swept up by the demands of her busy, flourishing career, Chris is blind to the subtle warnings that a dark, malevolent pres- ence has invaded her comfortable townhouse. Powerful and cunning, it is taking possession of Regan, her 12-year-old daughter. Every ave- nue of help leads to a dead end. Now hope lies only in a doubt-ridden priest and his fragile elder... in a terrifying battle with an obscene, unspeakable evil that must end in victory...or madness and death. --back cover

The Exorcist is written in a flowing style and has interesting characters. At times, the book is even a little scary, but the most horrific parts are not haunting but vulgar in a way that must have ruffled some feathers at time of publication. Even today, a scene where a demon makes a child rape herself with a crucifix is quite... something.
The antiquated ideas about psychiatric illnesses, such as the existence of hysteria and neurasthenia, were interesting to read.

Not nearly as scary as when I read it as a teen but I didn't expect it to be. Still a great, great read. The author's voice was nearly perfect for the narration. If you like horror books - and this one is quite graphic - you'll probably like this.
