Meh. I read this to get a feel for Scotland while I was visiting Scotland. That was achieved. I thought the romance between Rebus and his much younger colleague was a bit of masculine fantasy, and the character of Caro, a hippy protesting the deportation and imprisonment of refugees, was just over the top ridiculous. I suppose there could be real people that annoying, and when Rebuys tells her off we are allowed to feel satisfied, but I just felt that if she was that didactic she would have never tried to date a cop in the first place, and her character just rankled me. I can't help but like Rebus though. He is just the kind of drunk and determined lone wolf one wants in their detectives. A decent yarn overall.
