I enjoyed this novel more than I expected. Dickens writes very impressively, which maybe should not be a surprise but I imagined something more formal and tedious. He writes with a rhythm and some amazing turns of phrases. I am unfamiliar with the speech of the time to understand how much of what seems novel to me is merely the idiom of the time.

I've watched several film and TV adaptations of his works over the years, but had been put off attempting the novels themselves by their length and the density if Dickens prose. As it turns out though, his vivid characterisations and melodramatic plots do suit my reading style pretty well. I'm not sure I would want to attempt more than one a year, but at that level of engagement the books are enjoyable and should last me a good decade yet. I've watched several film and TV adaptations of his works over the years, but had been put off attempting the novels themselves by their length and the density if Dickens prose. As it turns out though, his vivid characterisations and melodramatic plots do suit my reading style pretty well. I'm not sure I would want to attempt more than one a year, but at that level of engagement the books are enjoyable and should last me a good decade yet. I had only a vague recollection of watching a black and white Great Expectations film as a child (probably the 1946 one rerun on Sunday afternoon TV) so remembered images of scary Magwitch on the misty marshes, and bizarre Miss Havisham in her wedding dress. However very little of the actual plotline remained in my mind so the story I thought I would encounter was strikingly different to the one I have just read. This was a little confusing at times, but made for a better reading experience because I really didn't know what would happen next. I was struck by the number of convenient coincidences that drove the narrative, several of which raised my eyebrows, however I cannot fault Dickens' portrayal of memorable characters and distinctive settings.
Pip himself is an irritating little so-and-so, even more so once he begins to realise his Expectations, and Dickens' patronising attitude towards women did grate on me from time to time. Those aspects aside though, I loved Wemmick's Castle and our glimpses of his life there with Aged Parent. Pumblechook is fun too and I felt sorry for both Estella and Miss Havisham. I could picture lots of the London settings as well as the bleak marshes and I frequently chuckled at Dickens' mentions of etiquette and behaviours. He had a great talent for slipping sharply observed detail into scenes. If only he could have held back on his sentimental speechifying! Overall though, Great Expectations is a good coming of age novel that I felt has stood the test of time exceptionally well.

The pacing is really good, there is humor, it's frustrating sometimes (so angsty all around) but the characters' actions make sense. They talk about what is going on with them emotionally. Maybe not always instantly, but the fact that this doesnt have a lot of the miscommunication trope is a HUGE plus. It actually felt so much more real: sometimes you can tell what's up, sometimes you need a while to get the courage to speak. You grow, you leave things behind.

I manage to move my throat enough to spit in his face. My spit lands on his forehead, a sliver of fish bone in it. He grunts and reaches up with his other hand, wiping it away.
“Do it again,” he whispers, eyes dancing darkly. “This time in my mouth, please.” He opens his mouth, showing me his tongue, wanting it. Damn it. Everything that’s uncouth and repulsive about me he somehow loves.
He shuts his mouth and grins. “Fine. Just know I will be returning the favor one day.”

By the way, I didn't get the Jack Sparrow vibe that others talk about here. Yes, there is rum, but Ramsay often stays sober, isn't some whacky figure, just a hard-ass pirate (and kinky af).
So TL;DR this is dark romance, it's believable, it has pirates and sirens and cursed ships and it is dark. Heed the CNs, and if you're sensitive to violence, <spoiler> esp spousal and sexual abuse, </spoiler> maybe skip this one.
I read this book in high school, half of it in one long night, and it was confusing and weird and long. I realize this is a wholly unfair review, but I have spent too much time hating this book to give it anything better until I bring myself to re-read it.

La seconde débute alors que Pip apprend d’un homme de loi qu’un mystérieux bienfaiteur souhaite le voir installé à Londres afin de parfaire son éducation et devenir un gentleman. Pip commence alors à nourrir de grandes espérances. Le jeune homme, une fois sorti de l’environnement de son enfance et de la pauvreté, verra son bien-aimé Joe d’un autre œil, toujours aimant, mais un peu honteux de son ignorance et de son manque d’éducation. Pip, déjà plus instruit que le forgeron, aura conscience de cet écart, et cette prise de conscience éveillera en lui un fort sentiment de culpabilité. Désormais libre, il se lie d’amitié avec le fils de son répétiteur, devient dépensier, s’offre un valet à qui il a du mal à trouver des occupations. Ignorant toujours l’identité de son bienfaiteur, ce qu’il sait et croit savoir alimente doublement ses espérances. Son amour pour Estella est toujours aussi fort, et bien qu’il ait conscience de l’absence de la jeune fille à son égard, il espère encore.
Dickens excelle dans la peinture de l’Angleterre du XIXème siècle. La misère, l’hypocrisie, la petitesse d’esprit des pauvres comme des nantis ne lui échappent pas. Lui-même issu d’une famille plus que modeste et ayant connu la misère avant d’accéder à la notoriété et l’aisance, tous les rangs sociaux lui sont familiers. Qu’ils soient principaux ou secondaires, tous les personnages sont fouillés, hauts en couleurs, nuancés. Il n’y a ni bon ni méchants, chaque protagoniste réserve des surprises, soit par son destin, sa psychologie, son comportement. Même le jeune Pip, que nous suivons sur plusieurs années, n’est pas dépourvu de “mauvais” sentiments. Comme lui, au fil de la lecture, nous avons quelques espérances le concernant, et son destin réserve bien des surprises et des rebondissements.
L’humour est aussi omniprésent chez Dickens. Certains personnages brillent par leur grotesque, d’autres par leur dignité sincère, d’autres encore par leur excentricité, ou même leur dualité. Le tout arrosé d’un humour à toute épreuve. La relation entre Pip et Joe est bouleversante, leur attachement réciproque est exemplaire. Les personnages de Dickens sont tous fascinants, les relations entre eux superbement dépeintes. L’aventure est aussi au rendez-vous. Forçats évadés, trahison, jeune orphelin au destin chaotique, une vieille riche proche de la sorcière, une beauté au cœur de glace, tout contribue à faire de ce roman un pur bonheur, un livre DÉVORABLE d’un bout à l’autre, grâce au style jubilatoire de Dickens, de sa parfaite connaissance de l’époque, des milieux sociaux, de la nature humaine. Un régal !!!
