THE FIRST STEP ON THE OBSIDIAN PATH

A broken man, Khraen awakens alone and lost. His stone heart has been shattered, littered across the world. With each piece, he regains some small shard of the man he once was. He follows the trail, fragment by fragment, remembering his terrible past.

There was a woman.

There was a sword.

There was an end to sorrow.

Khraen walks the obsidian path.

For me, there's just something about a doomed protagonist who slowly falls into a corruption arc that both the reader and the character recognizes is happening and yet there's nothing that can be done about it that's just... *chef's kiss

This was an interesting take on an amnesia premise. Instead of bits of memory coming back all at once or at random intervals, we have a character who can take concrete, specific actions in order regain memories of his own life, and he knows what needs to be done, but it necessitates actions that are either difficult or violent (often both). And I mean violent; there are some pretty ruthless scenes in this one. I got this recommendation from @PreacherReads video "Booktube Recommends Fantasy Novels for Horror Fans! Must-Read Books You’ll Love!" It was recommended twice on the video, so I thought, hey this must be the one to read.

I would say this book would be great for horror readers who want to dip their toes into epic/high fantasy and don't want something "advanced." The writing is poetic & grim but written as if it were a YA novel. The book was great, it kept me captivated all the way through, there were some cringy moments that seemed pretty childish to me but I kept pushing through. I had too high hopes for this and wanted to love it so much. One thing is for sure, it got me out of my reading slump. I wont be continuing the series though.

You've got a man who …

unexpectedly fantastic (also very grimdark)

”Your actions will define you.”

I love stumbling across really good fantasy that nobody’s heard of. I’ve sort of fallen out of the fantasy genre as a whole in the last few years, mostly because it felt like everytime I dipped a toe in it just felt like more of the same. And that’s fine! Everyone loves comfort reads! But when I read something new, I want it to feel new. I’d honestly never heard of this author before randomly adding this to my to-read list earlier this year, but holy cow does he have a ton of books out! This definitely was new to me, it was different, and it was delightful.

A note for my friends, whom I know love fantasy dearly: this is definitely grimdark fantasy. It’s very dark, very descriptive, and not exactly fluffy. There’s a lot of blood, a lot of description of …
