I didn't finish the whole book, unfortunately -- this was a library book which I left on the subway by mistake -- but I appreciated Daly's economic analysis. His distinction between economic growth (quantitative) and development (qualitative) was useful, and I also appreciated his acknowledgement that economic models must be considered as a subsystem of the earth's ecosystem, as opposed to an isolated, unencumbered, limitless universe
The only failing of this particular work is that it is a kind of compilation of different essays or prior writings or speeches of his, so there is some unnecessary repetition of ideas that should have been smoothed out. I will seek out another book by Daly that will hopefully be more coherent.
Otherwise, Daly is spot on. This kind of "voice from the wilderness" analysis of economics needs to be heard. It's ridiculous that 40 years after this book was written we are …
