Sweet coming of age story, or should I say "stories" as it's a two-stories-in-one novel.
One is about a young indian writer with a fresh book deal, moving to New York and about her first queer relationship and the excitement and pains of the life of a writer and the publishing world.
Embedded in this, or taking urns from chapter to chapter, is the other story. It is that of her first novel: It has a certain fanfic feel and is about a special-gifted survivor of a terrorist attack, she can pass between the world of the living and that of the ghosts, the afterworld. Afterworlds. And about falling in love with a hot immortal guy and about girl friendships.
Both stories deal with teen angst, fears and insecurities, growing and learning from mistakes. Afterworlds is overall charmingly written, a fun to read youth novel, and I am surprised to …

I haven't read any other Westerfeld book before but I can only guess he broke with expectations...?! Well, I for one wish I had had a novel like this when I was a teen. :)
