We decided that this was more appropriate for our 10-year-old than the Vampire Academy series. It's so-so until about halfway through, and then it gets more entertaining. I've already started the next book!

It was better than I thought it would be. Sydney Sage (Alchemist), is a character just as brave and fierce like Rose, in her own way. This continuance with the series was a good idea. I love the change of view (though I still love Rose's) and the way she rises in the book from being someone who's quiet and just follows orders, to someone who follows her heart and knows right from wrong. She's like Nancy Drew in the way she solves mysteries and is independent. The twists were good. Just as I thought the book was coming to an end and all was right, another secret was revealed. Sydney's more funny and determined than I gave her credit for. Though she's clueless in some areas of life and more than efficient in others, it was nice learning more about her.
