In the enchanted kingdom of Brooklyn, the fashionable people put on cute shoes, go to parties in warehouses, drink on rooftops at sunset, and tell themselves they ve arrived. A whole lot of Brooklyn is like that now but not Vassa s working-class neighborhood.
This wasn’t at all what I was expecting. Like a dark fairy tale retelling run through with weird fiction. Actually a lot about it reminded me of Kelly Link’s short story about the convenience store and the zombies. I love this kind of thing, to be clear.
Pretty enjoyable. I really love the retelling of the Russian folktale, but there were bits and pieces of the plot that I didn't understand. I get how irrational crushes are, but Vassa is seriously attracted to a being that isn't human in any way, shape, or form?
