protomattr reviewed A beautiful question by Frank Wilczek
Review of 'A beautiful question' on 'Goodreads'
4 stars
Beautifully written, this excellent book poses the question: is our Universe based on beautiful ideas? Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but Wilczek makes a strong case for our evolving understanding of what constitutes the Universe (the Standard Model, or his preferred “Core Theory”), based on deep mathematical concepts of symmetry, as proof that yes, the Universe is based on beautiful ideas. Surveying big thinkers such as Pythagoras, Plato, Kepler, Newton, Maxwell, Noether, Einstein, as well as artists and philosophers, and, finally, giving us the mind-bending perspective of supersymmetry, Wilczek provides ample fascination for the reader to continue well after reading his book. Not to mention the voluminous glossary “Terms of Art”, scores of color plates and figures, and a well-curated recommended reading section.
