The Elfstones of Shannara is a 1982 epic fantasy novel by American writer Terry Brooks. It is the first sequel to The Sword of Shannara and the second book in The Original Shannara Trilogy. I just can't get into this book. The story is cliche, the writing simplistic and old-fashioned and the characters bland or annoying. I'm still looking forward to the TV show, at least it has pretty pictures.

Evil threatens the Four Lands once more and the descendents of Shannara must come together once again. Less dependent on Tolkien's structure, the quest narrative still features prominently. Much as with The Sword of Shannara the setting is what makes the novel succeed. The slow unfolding of more information feels, in a way, like coming home. This makes up for stock characters and predictable plotlines.
