Simon R. Green: Drinking midnight wine (2002, ROC) 4 stars

A writing style that reminded me of blended Neil Gaman and Douglas Adams, this fanciful tale summons many of the old folklore of humanity to tell a similar but nonetheless new story. I enjoyed it quite a bit and found the pace compelling. I did feel like the end of the book rushed up on me and everything was resolved rapidly, but it's a nitpick in an otherwise fun read.

Scott MacKay: The meek (2001, New American Library) 4 stars

I found the story very compelling. Some of the foreshadowing was heavy handed, and in some places the writing felt stiff and forced, but the main story was quite interesting. If you read for descriptive excellence, this is not the book for you - if you ready for compelling story, this is right up your alley.

Daniel José Older: Salsa Nocturna (2012, Crossed Genres Publications) 4 stars

What a wonderful collection of interconnected stories! The writing feels modern, immediate, and honest. The author has crafted an intriguing other world full of joy, sadness, love and lust. And ghosts. Parts are crudely erotic, often laugh out loud funny, and heart warming in a curious way I did not expect.
