I really enjoyed this book. I would qualify this more as a fantasy than a romance genre. The world building is done well and is done so gradually. The author slowly unveils a world that adheres to certain laws and the world order seems quite believable. Most characters and their behaviors are very believable as they still behave like humans. Psychological cause and effect are well preserved, well-done, and relatable.
The book does introduce many plot lines and characters. However, I didn't feel that it was too many as all the introductions are done gradually or indirectly. The complexity added to the richness of the story.
The romance part of the book was much less believable and realistic but this is fantasy. Although I think it provided a bit of respite amid the darker themes of the book thus adding not subtracting from the whole value.

This book may be hard to read for some because it includes many elements of harsh reality: attempted rape, discrimination, physical abuse. I found this book believable and engaging because the dark subplots accurately mimic life, while putting some distance to it by centering it in a fantasy world.
The language in which this is written is precise and easy to read. The characters are believable and strong, there is enough subterfuge and side stories that I couldn't help but dive straight into the next book in the series.
