Jane's days at a midlevel Minneapolis insurance company are perfectly ordinary. She blends in well, unremarkably pretty in her floral-print dresses and extra efficient at her low-level job. She's just the kind of woman middle manager Steven Hepsworth likes--meek, insecure, and willing to defer to a man. No one has any idea who Jane really is. Least of all Steven. But plain Jane is hiding something. And Steven's bringing out the worst in her.
This book sure was pretty awful! I didn't like the story line or even Jane as a character. She was a self-centered bitch and when she did what she ended up doing it was predictable. Her cat sure was cute though. I'll give the author that!
Not my normal type of genre fiction but wow was it a fun read.
Our protagonist in this book is a self described sociopath who is out for revenge against a man who wronged her bff. We're told how she doesn't experience emotional responses like most people do, but it was hard not to see her relationship with her bff as a caring relationship even though she doesn't think of it that way; it was fun to see her forming attachments over the course of the book even though she didn't think she could. She tells herself she's going through the motions of these relationships and I'm not sure if we're supposed to believe her narration or if she has grown in this regard over the course of the book.

The revenge part of the story was OK but not as motivating for me as it seems to be for all the ladies I know who have loved this book. :) I love how self aware Jane is in how she performs femininity, how she sends messages to the people around her by the way she behaves and dresses in a wonderfully aware way.
There were a couple of scenes that were genuinely great to read in this, like the scene in the woods. So great! I want to go back and re-read it right now.
Not sure I'll be reading more in the thriller genre in the future, but I have a feeling I might check out some of the author's other books in the future.
