What a cute and chipper little sci-fi classic. Picked it up at the recommendation of a friend, and… well, aside from the fact that it’s terribly dated, it was an upbeat fast read. It’s hard to stress enough just how relentlessly positive this book is, and how much it stands out against the darker more cynical stuff that gets written today. In a lot of ways it almost reads like a children’s book, except for the fact that deep discussions of sapience and personhood are discussed, and that there’s a pretty brutal murder. I was also a little thrown by the fact that the last… 3rd of the book ends up being a courtroom drama. Not at all what I was expecting. Not bad, but unexpected.
