Chris reviewed The Road to Gandolfo by Robert Ludlum
Thriller send-up by the king of thrillers
3 stars
As Ludlum states in the intro to this novel, it started as a legit thriller project but as it went on he realised how silly the concept was and decided to play it for laughs. So we have a decorated war hero who plans to kidnap the Pope, a reluctant conscript and lawyer sent to keep an eye on him, four ex-wives, and plenty of comedy though much of it in a broader mid-20th century style than we'd expect these days. It's Ludlum though so it keeps you reading. Its being intended as a comedy means there is less gore and heavy action than would otherwise be the case, and this may detract from it because where do you go instead? The result however is quite a fun read although of its day.
