Before he was the Nowhere Man, Evan Smoak was a highly trained government operative known to a few as Orphan X. This is the story of Smoak's first outing as the Nowhere Man, where after completing a mission in Northern California, he happens to spot a young woman at a coffee shop. Brutalized and under the control of a very powerful, unscrupulous man, her life is in danger if she doesn't escape. And the only person that can help her do that is a man with the background and skills of the Nowhere Man.
This short story serves as a bridge between the first and second novels and helps to explain how Evan's number gets out into the "wild" to enable him to help others.
Good but a short, short story
Very short story about Evan Smoak's first foray into being The Nowhere Man. I do love Orphan X stories, even though I never thought I'd like books like this. But as over the top Evan and the bad guys can be, I have a great time reading them. This tiny tale was no different.
Okay, this first mission by Orphan X was really short, so it seems like overkill to mark it down as a "book read". It was an interesting enough short story, explaining The Nowhere Man's first "mission of mercy". Maybe a little overpriced at US$1.99, but I used some leftover credits, so it didn't hurt too bad.
