An entertaining, plot driven read.
Really good epic fantasy. Nothing too ground breaking here, but I enjoyed the characters. Much like George RR Martin's characters, they all have their flaws and Liane tries to get you to see behind even the most despicable characters. Yes, it is one of those novels told via the "point of view per chapter" (like I said, it isn't groundbreaking by any means). And, also like Martin, magic is kept to a minimum and isn't some kind of duex ex machina used to propel the plot. The main characters, even (or especially) the "good" mercenary, have serious flaws but try to do their best.
So I certainly sped through it and am looking forward to reading book 2. I hope it isn't as disappointing as the followup to [b:Acacia: The War with the Mein|7048857|Acacia The War with the Mein|David Anthony Durham|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1275711090s/7048857.jpg|3302611] was, which I couldn't finish. It too was a good epic fantasy told from various points of view. But it got boring. Let's hope for better with [b:Heaven's Needle|10912443|Heaven's Needle (Ithelas, #2)|Liane Merciel|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51bSnU%2BFDAL.SL75.jpg|13880119]!
