pithypants reviewed Last Summer by Jennifer Weiner
Review of 'Last Summer' on 'Goodreads'
2 stars
I was in the mood for a light beach book and that seems to be Jennifer Weiner's speciality, so...
Initially it ticked all the boxes – good setting in Cape Cod, an extended dysfunctional family with multiple members sorting through their own drama, a bit of a mystery looming...
My issue with this book: she went WAY overboard with the coincidences and infidelity. I might be willing to suspend disbelief for ONE coincidence requiring lottery-like odds, but she just piled them on. (And here's where the spoilers kick-in, so if you think you'll read this book, you should probably stop here.)
What are the odds...

What are the odds...
- The father of the bride would've slept with the mother of the groom 20 years earlier
- The jilted groom would go out for random sex and end up sleeping with the bride's uncle
- The mother of the bride would see her husband twirling around a woman (in relief) and assume they're having an affair so she would run out and bang her high school boyfriend
- The grandmother of all these nut jobs would've had an affair shortly before she got pregnant and not know if her children were really the offspring of her husband – and some 50+ years later her sister would randomly buy everyone 23-and-Me tests.
I mean. C'mon. Still, I'm willing to give it 2 stars because of the beach. :)
