Yashima reviewed You slay me by Katie MacAlister (An Aisling Grey, guardian, novel)
Review of 'You slay me' on 'Goodreads'
3 stars
I started this book with the expectation of an average (3) light supernatural romance read. So what happened when my expectations met the book? The plot happened. “Clueless girl goes to foreign country, tries to do her job instead becomes a murder suspect, finds out she has magical powers and is fated to become the mate of a dragon. She obtains a funky demonic sidekick and solves the murder while dreaming sexy stuff that is no way for real.”
Pros
Jim, the powerless poo machine +2
More than one steamy sex-scene +1
Hot Hungarian Dragon likes meat +1
Mating resistance “I make my own fate” +1
Cons
Heavy use of “mate rhymes with fate” and “You’re mine” tropes (I am so over both of these) -2
I don’t remember the protagonist’s name. Ok so it’s 1st person but still her name might have been used in dialogue somewhere ... …

I don’t remember the protagonist’s name. Ok so it’s 1st person but still her name might have been used in dialogue somewhere ... also she’s silly and clueless -1
Abuse of my native tongue (German) with “Venediger” and countless weird French phrases of which I am sure several must be made up -1
Learning curve of the “dark arts” absolutely “realistic” (compare “clueless” above) also people generally being to friendly to a stranger which made everyone a suspect in the end -1
So back at 3 - okay, I confess. I shifted those numbers around until it got to a rating I feel this deserves because just count the words in the “cons” section ... then I’d be at 1* quickly. Jim is the saving grace for this one. Because of him I might consider reading the next book in the series, also there’s to hoping the protagonist might be less clueless once she has had time to learn about being a Guardian.
So what’s her name? Really .... it must have been somewhere in the book.
