This is the first of the four Hilary Tamar mystery novels by Sarah Caudwell. If you're the target demographic, you will adore them: anglophile, intellectual aspirations, weakness for epistolary novels. Go read the wikipedia entry about Caudwell — if she sounds interesting to you, you'll love these books, too.
I love that the gender of the narrator, legal scholar Hilary, is never revealed. I adore that the action almost all gets told as someone reading an improbably long letter, or the friends chatting over either coffee or drinks.
