This may be the best book in the Swallows and Amazons series, which means that it might be the best children's book ever written. The Swallows and Amazons are exploring the Arctic (the area around the lake) during winter vacation when they meet Dick and Dorothea Callum, staying at a farm on the lakeside. Skating, signalling, exploring, ice-boating, astronomy, everything a kid could ask for.

Review of 'Winter holiday' on 'Goodreads'

Wow, this is so good. They keep getting better and better. Two new characters appear, Dick and Dot, city kids who have to figure out how to deal with all this nature stuff, just adding to the lovely cast of characters. Captain Nancy is barely seen in this one, having the mumps (and "a face the size of a pumpkin"), but is still the mad mastermind behind many of their adventures. Will their expedition to the North Pole be successful (and remember historically, that has been quite dangerous)?

I just hope I won't be let down by the next book. How can you get better than this?
