4 stars
Over 20 years ago, I saw "All The President's Men" on TV and shortly afterward read the book and books by participants of the Watergate Scandal. "The Secret Man" is the final piece of the jigsaw puzzle; who was "Deep Throat". Bob Woodward used to say that if you knew who "Deep Throat" was it was obvious, if you didn't know, it was not obvious".
Both Woodward and William Mark Felt, Sr. denied that Felt, number 2 at the FBI during the Watergate years, was "Deep Throat" until Felt broke the story himself in 2005. After which Woodward was free to publish the rest of the story.

The book details the background behind how Woodward originally knew Felt and retells the story of the secret meetings which were obfuscated in "All The President's Men". It also details Woodward's relationship with Felt over the post-Watergate years which was troubled as Felt felt that Woodward had already given away too much. Woodward tells of those people who had guessed correctly who "Deep Throat" was and how they had come to keep the secret or had been led off the trail by Woodward and/or Felt's continuing deception.
In the end a strange dilemma occurs, which makes Woodward question whether he is still required to keep the secret which he had promised not to reveal during Felt's lifetime...
A must for Watergate otaku but probably unintelligible if you don't already know the story.
